As we enter our final week of accepting applications for our AmeriCorps VISTA positon, we’d like to take a moment to remind everyone what an AmeriCorps VISTA does, and why.
AmeriCorps is an organization funded by the government with the on-going mission to fight poverty. This fight against poverty takes many shapes, from educational programs to eliminating food deserts. Our AmeriCorps VISTA focuses on fighting poverty by working to improve our programs and help us fulfill our mission to ensure that every man, woman, and child has a safe, healthy, accessible home. A home can be an asset for a family. Traditional homes appreciate in value over time, if they are taken care of.
Currently, we are in the second year of a three-year partnership with AmeriCorps that allows us to host a VISTA. So far, we have had two VISTAs – Katie Anderson and Gwen Peck. Their involvement has been incredibly beneficial for us, and sets the affiliate up for success beyond the three years of VISTA. First as a Summer Intern and then as a VISTA, Katie was a crucial part in the continuing success of our A Brush with Kindness program. Through her grant-writing and development efforts Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country hired its first Executive Director and Construction Manager in 2016. With Gwen, we have created our first three-year strategic plan that will act as a guiding document beyond her time with us. We are excited by what this coming year may bringand who our new VISTA may be.
